ACEC PROJECT EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Charles Street Streetscape, Baltimore, Maryland bar

Charles Street Streetscape

EBA was selected as a finalist for the 2005 Project Excellence Award, given by the American Council of Engineering Companies Maryland. EBA proved successful in designing streetscape improvements to enhance the general aesthetics of the area, while preserving features with historical significance; addressing design challenges, such as underground sidewalk cavities/vaults; utility relocation/protection; maintaining customer access to various businesses; and minimizing the disturbance to pedestrian and vehicle traffic through the area during construction.

Western Maryland Rail Trail

EBA led the design and construction efforts for 22 miles of this hiker/biker trail, starting at Fort Frederick and extending past Hancock to the Washington/Allegheny County boundary line. The project was developed in three phases, and EBA was credited for development of an innovative design approach.

The work included rehabilitation of numerous railroad bridges, safety gates, signage, and pedestrian barriers. Parking lots were provided for the trail users at appropriate locations. While designing rehabilitation for various bridges, culverts, and pipes, importance was given to the environmental, aesthetic, cultural and historic values of the area. Native stone was used on both faces of the tunnels, and several interpretive signs were placed at strategic locations along the trail to provide the users with information about the historic background of the railroad. The pipe crossings were provided with stabilization mats instead of riprap to allow for grass to grow while controlling the erosion of soil. All wetlands found on site were delineated and protected during construction. The trail is anticipated to become part of "Bike Across America" trail system and will provide an excellent connection through Maryland for national and international bike events.

The construction of the trail has been very beneficial for the local economy, with a significant increase in tourism in the Hancock and Big Pool areas. This rail-to-trail project is an excellent example of rehabilitation of an abandoned facility for recreational use. This $3.6 million project was recognized by the Maryland Society of Professional Engineers (MDSPE) by awarding “Outstanding Project Award” in 2003.
